How to Create Content Variations Without Making Thin Duplicates

A workflow for producing meaningful content variants for legitimate testing, localization and channel adaptation.

Updated September 12, 2026 · Editorially reviewed

Content variations are useful when the destination really changes: a different audience, channel, reading level, localization, ad test or format. They are less useful when they simply produce many near-identical pages for the same search intent.

A better variation workflow

  1. Define the variable you are testing or adapting.
  2. Keep factual claims consistent.
  3. Change examples, framing or format where appropriate.
  4. Review every published version.
  5. Avoid indexing multiple pages that answer the same query with essentially the same content.
